UPS Road Code Event

May 8, 2013 by admin Leave a Comment

UPS Road Code will be visiting our Andre Agassi Clubhouse on Thursday, May 9, to teach our teens good driving behaviors!

UPS Road Code

Driving Change in Teen Driving Behaviors
Road Code

  • Motor vehicle accidents are the leading cause of death for U.S. teens, accounting for more than one in three teenage deaths, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).
  • Each day, more than 15 people are killed and more than 1,200 people are injured in crashes that were reported to involve a distracted driver (CDC).

Leading the charge to combat this ever-growing problem, The UPS Foundation, the charitable arm of UPS, teamed up with Boys & Girls Clubs of America to create UPS Road Code, a national program that teaches safe driving techniques to teens. The program launched on a small scale in 2009, and expanded to Clubs in 22 new markets in 2012. Today, the highly successful program is available in 52 Boys & Girls Clubs throughout 36 U.S. cities.

UPS Road Code is largely based on the same safety training used by UPS’s own drivers, who are known for their safe driving techniques. Taught by more than 150 UPS employees trained as volunteer instructors, UPS Road Code provides teens with four sessions of classroom-based instruction, as well as time ”behind the wheel” of a virtual driving simulator.

The program focuses on different safety principles each week, from basic instruction to the consequences of risky behaviors such as talking on cell phones, texting or drinking while driving. Throughout the program, teens have a chance to practice what they’ve learned on the driving simulators, which feature a computer screen that serves as a windshield to the program’s interactive animation, a steering wheel and life-like gas and brake pedals.

Tech Girls Rock/CA World Event with Richard Branson

May 2, 2013 by admin Leave a Comment

On April 22, 10 of our female Club members aged 10-13 got the chance to learn about what it takes to pursue careers in information technology. Previously, the scope of the girls’ experience with technology had been limited to typical everyday interactions with cell phones, basic computer programs and websites. The Tech Girls Rock Workshop allowed this perspective to grow by leaps and bounds, including introductions to career paths in technology that the girls did not even know existed prior to the event.

On the way to the Tech Girls Rock program, I could feel the excitement building. The bus was full of questions about the things the girls might get to see, as well as what they thought it was going to be like to meet Sir Richard Branson. Some girls wanted to know how he got to be such a success in the business world, while others were starting to think about what hobbies they would pursue if they got the chance to be that successful.

As we entered the CA Technologies conference, I saw the eyes of the girls light up. CA Technologies did a wonderful job in explaining to the girls how important it is for them to maintain a commitment to good grades, especially in science and math courses, if they intend on pursuing careers in technology. The enthusiasm that the CA Technologies staff showed was infectious, and pretty soon all of our Club members were cheering “Tech Girls ROCK!” throughout the convention center. The sea of tables and booths manned by people in badges seemed overwhelming at first, and then became an exciting maze of information as they completed a scavenger hunt to learn about how each company delivered customer service to their clients using the most current technologies. As we stopped by each company’s booth to learn more, I watched the girls become more engaged as their questions grew more detailed. I could see the curiosity brewing!

Later, the girls raved about the chance they had to meet Sir Richard Branson and what he was like. At first, the girls got used to the bright lights and nervously laughed as they waited for him to join the group and chat with them. One of our members asked Sir Richard what inspired him. He responded that music as well as our environment were his main inspirations, and that he hopes we will be able to counteract the effects of global warming. Afterward, the girls spoke about all that he was able to accomplish and how they would like to be able to blaze their own trail in life.  As he spoke, I watched the girls sit attentively as they listened to him cover topics including how he created the Virgin brand as well as his aspirations to make space exploration as accessible to the general public as traditional air traffic is now. The girls watched in wonder as footage of flights by Virgin Galactic played on the four screens above. They watched videos of how a special initiative called Virgin Unite is using entrepreneurial techniques to fight poverty around the world, and how the resulting achievements in lifting communities up are changing lives.

As we left the convention center, I was stopped by someone attending the conference. He wanted to know what group we were a part of and how he could get his own daughter involved. I smiled and handed him a Boys and Girls Club card and encouraged him to learn more about the technology programs offered nationwide. He replied that he would look into the local Clubhouse near him once he returned home from the conference.

When we returned to the Clubhouse, the girls went running back to their friends, sharing all the stories of what they had just seen. As they paraded around in their new Tech Girls Rock t-shirts, they started to gather other Club members around them who had a host of questions about their workshop. As they took out their drawstring bags to show what was inside, I could see the pride that each girl had in what she had just been a part of. I’ve overheard the girls speaking to each other about their new dreams to be hired for the jobs that they had just recently learned of, and how they are making short term plans to get there.

Thanks to all who attended Framing Hope

April 30, 2013 by admin Leave a Comment

On Thursday, April 25 the Boys & Girls Clubs of Las Vegas hosted Framing Hope at the Amanda Harris Gallery of Contemporary Art to benefit the Downtown Boys & Girls Club.  A silent auction featured 30 vintage Las Vegas images courtesy of the Las Vegas News Bureau that were turned into one-of-a-kind works of art by 30 local artists.  Artists who participated include Jerry Misko, Tim Bavington Benjamin Alejendro, Mowgli, Dana Satterwhite, Tanya Watler, Biscuit Street Preacher, Ali Fatholahi  and more.  The event was spearheaded by the Friends of the Downtown Boys & Girls Club:  Dave Kirvin, Brigette Kirvin, Terri Maruca, Amanda Nelle Harris and Dana Satterwhite.

Councilman Bob Coffin presented Boys & Girls Clubs of Las Vegas president, Dulcinea Almazan a check for $16,200 from the City of Las Vegas to assist with programming and funding for the Downtown Boys & Girls Clubs.  Guests in attendance also had the opportunity to hear Boys & Girls Clubs of Las Vegas Youth of the Year, Jorge Corral, talk about what the Boys & Girls Clubs mean to him.

The Downtown Boys & Girls Club, located at 28th & Stewart, serves more than 100 kids everyday in one of the most disadvantaged neighborhoods in Las Vegas.  For most of these kids, this is the only safe place for them to go after school and all day in the summer. It provides peace-of-mind for working parents who know their children are in a safe, structured environment while they are at work.  Nearly 90% of the kids who attend the club are on free or reduced lunch and one-third live below the poverty.

Over 175 guests attended the event. Mayor Carolyn Goodman, Councilman Bob Coffin, Yale Rowe, Kate & Gavin Whiteley, Adam & Erin Sperling, Norm and Cara Clarke, Rob Kolesar, Tracy Murray, Lynette Chappell, Fafie Moore, Tanya Murray, Phil Peckman, Allison Loftus, MaryKaye Cashman, Michael Downs, Pat Byrne, Rob Cornelius, Shelley Gitomer, Wendy & Mark Wallington, Wendy Albert and Lea Artis were just a few of the guests in attendance.

WorldVentures Foundation’s Volunteers Beautified Downtown Clubhouse

More than 100 WorldVentures Foundation™ volunteers beautified the Boys & Girls Clubs of Las Vegas Downtown Clubhouse on Thursday, April 11. The volunteers, in partnership with Boys and & Girls Clubs of Las Vegas (BGCLV), painted the exterior walls and contributed financially and through their time and talents to the club.

Most volunteers were WorldVentures™ Independent Representatives in Las Vegas for the company’s annual international convention. This project is part of a larger movement of the WorldVentures Foundation to add Service Excursions and beautification projects to each WorldVentures event.

“The transformation of the exterior of this Boys & Girls Club was nothing short of incredible,” said WorldVentures Foundation Fund Development Director Lori Strieff.  “The volunteers worked so hard painting the exterior and fence of the Club.  We are thankful and honored they chose to come out and support the WorldVentures Foundation and the Boys & Girls Club.”

The WorldVentures Foundation team acquired paint and material donations and WorldVentures lined up buses and lunches for the event. After all the hard work, there was a celebration as well as a wedding proposal!

“What a wonderful way to positively impact the lives of children,” said WorldVentures Foundation Executive Director Gwyneth Lloyd. “We are thrilled to bring a daily, local and global alignment to the Foundation’s work, allowing us to scale our impact through the involvement of many more of our WorldVentures Foundation global team members.”

“We are excited that the WorldVentures Foundation chose the Boys & Girls Clubs of Las Vegas as the organization to benefit from this VolunTour Project,” said Boys & Girls Clubs of Las Vegas CEO Dulcinea Almazan. “Our Downtown Clubhouse will benefit from a new exterior look that will make the community proud to call it their Club.”
